Rocky Ridge

How do you come up with ideas for your designs?

I've spent many hours pursuing whitetails. Whether it's with binoculars, camera, video camera or scope. I've also had trail cameras for over 20 years. It seems that almost every animal makes an impression on me. Every piece to this has point has characteristics of an animal that I've encountered. I've obviously embellished or exaggerated some of their measurements because I've never been in the presence of a 200" animal. Hopefully some day!!

How long does it take to make a set?

That's a tricky one to answer because there are a lot of factors. It's not like I build them individually. When I saw and prepare the raw wood, it generally results in enough material for multiple sets. When I build them, I get multiple sets to the same stage so that I am doing the same task to multiple sets on the same day. It's more efficient. Each wood has characteristics that make it easier or harder to work with. So, I guess I can't give an exact answer. I can tell you a lot goes into each set.

How did you come up with the idea?

Many years ago, a man from West Virginia had an article in North American Whitetail Magazine. He had built a beautiful wood shoulder mount. I copied the article and said, "one day I'm going to build one for myself". When COVID hit, I took the time to start my quest. Sometime during that build, it hit me that a Euro mount would take up less space and require less detail in regards to being able to sculpt an authentic looking body/face of a buck. Most mainly look at the rack anyway! I have yet to complete the whole shoulder mount! :-)
